South Africa does not use one single national central-placement exam for all post-school routes. Grade 12 certification, institution-level admission rules, TVET qualifications and quality assurance bodies should be read separately.

Data Interpretation Notes
These notes describe how the indicators should be read on a country profile page.
School and post-school totals differ
DBE ordinary school data and DHET post-school data use separate systems. Ordinary school learners should not be added to PSET enrolment without a stated method.
TVET enrolment is cycle-counted
DHET states that TVET students are counted once in every annual, semester and trimester cycle. This differs from a single headcount definition.
Provincial variation is not a ranking
Provincial departments manage public schools directly. National totals do not describe every provincial calendar, staffing pattern or school-level condition.
Finance values use different calendars
UIS and World Bank indicators often use calendar-year reporting. Stats SA and DHET finance values may use fiscal-year or academic-year reporting.
Completion, attainment and enrolment are different
Completion rates, adult attainment, school enrolment and institutional enrolment are different measurement types. They should not be treated as the same indicator.
Indicators are descriptive
The values describe structure, scale, participation, staffing, finance and post-school routes. They do not measure school quality by themselves.

Values are shown in the source unit and rounded only where the source reports a rounded value.
School-year, academic-year, fiscal-year, calendar-year and survey-year values should not be merged without a stated method. DBE, DHET, Stats SA, UNESCO UIS and World Bank indicators use different definitions, sectors and coverage rules.
