Source years differ because school census, assessment, workforce, funding, apprenticeship, and higher education datasets are collected on separate reporting calendars.

Education System Pathway

Early Years Foundation Stage
Typical age: 3–5
Nursery and reception. Reception includes baseline assessment and the Early Years Foundation Stage profile.
Primary Education
Typical age: 5–11

England’s education statistics are reported through several source systems. The notes below define the safest way to read the figures together.
England-only scope
School system figures in this module refer to England. UK-wide higher education data from HESA is used only where the source is provider-level and not directly comparable with school census data.
School census versus workforce census
Pupil counts and school counts come from the school census. Workforce figures come from the November school workforce census and use full-time-equivalent staff definitions.
Class size versus pupil-teacher ratio
Class-size indicators count pupils in classes. Pupil-teacher ratios divide pupils by full-time-equivalent teachers and should not be read as the same measure.
Funding versus spending
DfE core schools funding is a government funding total. Institute for Fiscal Studies per-pupil values are spending estimates in stated price terms.
Assessment data
Key stage 2, key stage 4, GCSE, and Level 3 results use different populations, qualification rules, and reporting years.
Post-16 participation
Participation rates for ages 16–18 are not enrollment totals. They classify education, training, apprenticeships, employment, and wider training status using DfE definitions.
