Ireland announced a new national Transitions Support Service for students in special schools. The service is backed by €1.35 million in Budget 2026 and is to roll out to all special schools from September 2026 after a pilot programme.
What Changed?
A pilot transition support model is being scaled nationally. Each special school will receive 34 transition support teaching days per year to help students, especially those in their final two years of school, prepare personalised transition plans and identify routes into further education, training, employment and other post-school opportunities.
Old System vs New System
Transition planning support in special schools was not provided through a national service with a standard annual allocation of transition support teaching days for every special school.
The NCSE will manage a national service on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth, giving all special schools a flexible annual allocation of transition support teaching days.
