Parliamentary committee action advanced changes to the upper secondary subject list for general academic secondary schools. The package introduces Media and Democracy as a compulsory subject and develops Informatics into Informatics and Artificial Intelligence.
What Changed?
The subject structure for AHS upper secondary education is being changed through amendments to the School Organisation Act. Informatics is to be renamed and developed as Informatics and Artificial Intelligence, while Media and Democracy is added as a new compulsory subject.
Old System vs New System
The AHS upper secondary subject list did not include Media and Democracy as a separate compulsory subject, and the informatics subject was not formally named Informatics and Artificial Intelligence.
Media and Democracy is added to the AHS compulsory subject list from 1 September 2027. Informatics and Artificial Intelligence replaces the previous informatics designation class by class, starting with 5th classes on 1 September 2027 and continuing with later grades in following school years.
Who Is Affected?
Student Impact
AHS students will face a revised compulsory subject offer in upper secondary education, with new or renamed learning areas covering media literacy, democratic participation, informatics, and artificial intelligence.
Parent / Family Impact
Parents of AHS students should expect changes to subject information, school timetables, and course descriptions from the phased start of the new subjects.
School / Institution Impact
AHS schools will need to plan timetables, teacher allocation, and learning materials for the phased introduction of the revised subject list.
Teacher / Staff Impact
Informatics teachers and teachers assigned to Media and Democracy may need new teaching plans and training once the detailed curricula are issued.
Key Dates

- 2027-09-01: Media and Democracy begins and Informatics and Artificial Intelligence starts with 5th classes
- 2028-09-01 and later: phased roll-out to higher classes.
What To Do
- AHS schools should monitor the detailed curriculum ordinances
- map teacher capacity
- and prepare information for students choosing or entering upper secondary pathways.
What To Watch Next
Watch for the curriculum ordinances, timetable allocation details, and guidance on teacher preparation before the 2027/28 school year.
Global Context
The change is relevant for international tracking of school responses to artificial intelligence and media literacy because Austria is placing these areas in the formal upper secondary subject structure.
