France’s education indicators should be read by source field, level, sector, and reporting calendar.
School-year fields differ
Rentrée 2025 first- and second-degree notes are newer than the 2024-2025 DEPP national snapshot. The snapshot remains useful because it separates pupils, apprentices, and other ministry groups.
Class size is not teacher ratio
Average pupils per class and student-teacher ratio are different indicators. DEPP labels this distinction directly in the education in figures publication.
Finance data is not an outcome measure
Expenditure values show funding scale and allocation. They do not measure learning outcomes without a stated statistical method.
Higher education counts use another system
SIES higher education data covers universities, private providers, apprenticeship routes, and mobility fields that are not the same as K-12 administrative school counts.
International student definitions vary
SIES international mobility students are not identical to every broader foreign-student count. The table uses the SIES mobility field for the main international indicator.
Académie variation is not a ranking
Académies administer national policy across territories. National tables in this module do not rank académies or local authorities.
